In an increasing number of primaries in New Jersey, the winning candidate has received less than 30% of the vote. This means over 70% of primary voters went unheard because of vote-splitting.
This outcome is bad for everyone, including the winner.
The winning candidate heads into the general election without a clear mandate, managing opponents in their own party who collectively earned more than twice their support. If they win the general election, they will govern with lingering bad blood and weakened ability to build coalitions for their priorities. Meanwhile, the majority of voters who backed other candidates feel unrepresented.
This isn't how democracy should work. When winners claim victory with less than a third of the vote, nobody truly wins.
There's a Better Way
Ranked-choice voting ensures the winning candidate has broad support, reduces divisiveness, and gives every voter a meaningful voice, not just the largest plurality.
Take Action: Demand Ranked-Choice Voting
First: Contact your state senator and tell them you support ranked-choice voting:
Then: Contact your county party committee if you're registered with a major party. Tell them you want ranked-choice voting for local and primary elections.
