My name is [NAME] and I am a constituent from [TOWN]. I'm writing to ask that you support [S1643/A1745] and [S1625/A2706]. The Municipal and School Board Voting Options Act [S1643/A1745] would enable local officials and voters to use ranked-choice voting for local elections. Additional ranked-choice voting enabling legislation [S1625/A2706] would allow ranked-choice voting in additional elections, including our primary elections. The results of the NJ11 congressional primary demonstrate vote splitting when a candidate wins with far less than a majority of support, in this case over 70% of voters preferred a different candidate, which is a recurring problem in New Jersey elections. With crowded primary fields in NJ7 and NJ12 we could see a similar result repeating in elections across the state. Ranked-choice voting (RCV) improves the voter experience, reduces toxic partisanship, the need for strategic voting and ensures that the majority of voters are represented by the winning candidate. This would also ensure the candidate who wins is able to build a coalition and has the backing of a majority of voters in their district to work on their priorities. As a constituent who strongly supports RCV, I urge you to support ranked-choice voting for local and primary elections. In this time of reduced trust in government and elected officials, I believe the elected officials that push for RCV will demonstrate faith in voters and continue our experiment in self government.
