With the primaries just around the corner this June, voters deserve to know exactly where our gubernatorial candidates stand on the issues that matter most. As many New Jerseyans grow tired of limited choices and a political system that often leaves them unrepresented, the debate over ranked-choice voting (RCV) has never been more urgent.

We have an opportunity to shape a future where every vote is valued and electoral reforms lead to more accountable leadership. That’s why it's crucial to ask our candidates clear, direct questions about RCV and the proposed Municipal and School Board Voting Options Act (S1622/A4042). Here are three questions you can use to demand transparency and commitment:

"Many voters are frustrated with limited choices and a lack of accountability from elected officials in our current electoral system. What is your position on Ranked Choice Voting, and do you support Bill (S1622/A4042) allowing municipalities to adopt it for local elections to improve representation and make officials more responsive to their constituents?"

"The Municipal and School Board Voting Options Act (S1622/A4042) is stuck in committee waiting to be heard. This law would enable any municipality in New Jersey, regardless of its form of government, to adopt RCV for all its local elections only after approval by the voters via referendum. Do you support this bill and would you sign it if you are elected Governor?"

"With the push for pro-democracy reforms, fairer elections through office block design, and several municipalities passing resolutions in support of RCV, New Jerseyans are clearly ready for change. Given the historical decline in voter turnout in NJ, do you support ranked-choice voting and Bill (S1622/A4042) as a cross-party way to increase voter satisfaction and participation, especially among young voters in local elections?"

By asking these vital questions, we can ensure that our candidates are held accountable and that they address the pressing need for electoral reform in New Jersey. Your voice can make a difference in building a more inclusive, transparent, and responsive political system.

Here's how you can help:

  • Reach Out: Contact your favorite candidate via email, social media, or at local campaign events.
  • Engage: Attend town halls and debates where candidates are participating in public forums to answer NJ voters' questions.
  • Collaborate: Email us about your outreach efforts at [email protected] or join the #gubernatorial-race conversation on our Slack (inquire [email protected] for the link).

Thank you for being an active part of the movement toward a fairer and more democratic New Jersey!
